Hey man, This is Popa Chubby writing from my home in New York. It's 6 A.M. and I haven't slept having just flown in from Holland after playing three shows of the music of Jimi Hendrix.
It was great to play a two hour set of Hendrix entirely. I felt totally possedesed by the spirit that is Jimi's music. Man the shit is so alive it has you pulling out riffs you never played.
I guess that leads me to another point seeing as how jam bands are so in vouge these days it almost seems that people are trying to figure out a formula on how to jam. You know, play this pattern and these notes when jamming.
My experience leads me to beleive that music is created in the moment and trying to recapture a past moment is an ultimately vacant experience. The key is to be liquid and flow over stone like water. Music moves in it's own path all you do is tend the stream.
Thats what Jimi had... he played only for the now. That's why now his stuff is still so vibrant.
Jimi played the blues, actually let me refrase that Jimi rewrote the blues bringing it full circle back to it's roots. Check out Voddo Chile riff and you will hear and feel pure Mother Africa.
His influences went from Straight Albert King riffs to Hades and back again. You can hear Muddy, Albert, Buddy, Curtis, Cropper and Dylan all mixed into his personal mythology. The beatles, Pink Floyd and Cream all in the forefront of his unconcius.
