Playing Scales on the Guitar Accurately and in Time – by Scott Thomas
"To overcome a problem that is beyond your current ability, you first need to slow down and evaluate how you are using that current ability. For instance, when you’re practicing scales and you make scalar moves, are you raising your fret-hand’s 4th finger higher off the neck than you are with the other fingers? If this is happening, then I know your fretting with your 4th finger a millisecond slower than those other fingers.
Now… if you’re picking cleanly and accurately, your pick hand won’t slow up and hit that lazy note accurately and this will sound sloppy. Don’t worry… this is where a metronome comes in. Using this tool will definitely help detect the kind of timing problems you are having. You can find all kinds of free downloads for metronome software on the web. Metronome.com is a good place to start. This device marks exact time by a regularly repeating an adjustable tick, measure in beats per minute (bpm). This will clock and fine tune you playing speed.
After slowly increasing your beats per minute, you’ll see that it will get harder to keep up. So start at a speed you can barely keep up with without straining. Next, go to a very simple speed and increase it until your hand coordination starts falling apart. This is how to find your goal tempo.
So, how do you keep up with all this? Easy… start a daily record log of your metronome settings to monitor your progress. Use your scheduler in your Outlook program on your computer. After a short time, you’ll see on paper your progress.
