"Bonnaroo is one of the few music festivals that dare to represent the multiple facets of music today. The Bonnaroo festival gathers pace with this visual document of its third impressive year.
The two discs that make up Live From Bonnaroo 2004 are about as good of a synopsis of a festival weekend as is possible. The Bonnaroo DVD is stunning, as was the event. Any festival that includes such diverse artists as Trey Anastasio, the Dead, Gillian Welch, Dave Matthews, Steve Winwood, Gomez, My Morning Jacket, Los Lonely Boys, Primus and Doc Watson has serious flare.
Bonnaroo ethos is to expose a wide variety of artists from differing musical backgrounds to the huge amounts of people who come to the event. The 2004 festival was no exception, with an incredible 95,000-strong crowd wallowing in the musical delights on offer. This release offers many highlights from the extraordinary festivities, with some of the best performances of the event shown in full.
They are all presented here in beautiful video form, and also included is a bonus 2nd DVD which includes performance schedules, artist info, press tent interviews, HeadCount commercials, and "We Have Arrived," a trailer for the film. Often when you watch a DVD of a certain event, especially one you attended, it pales in comparison to what it was really like to be there. With Bonnaroo 2004, this is not the case. Right away it becomes apparent that the producers put the right people in charge.
Coming in at around 4 solid hours, this collection adequately captures the festival’s eclectic and peppy nature by showcasing 30 of the featured artist’s performances with fine cinematography and nice interspersed footage of musicians canoodling behind the scenes.
There’s a definite hipster appeal with this collection. Conveniently broken up into hour long chunks, the Bonnaroo DVD set not only provides enough musical entertainment for a few weekend nights, but also has enough content for the scrutinous collector. If you’re perplexed or intimidated by the number of artists, there is also comprehensive information on each of the bands.
As with any collection this size, there are a few performances that will illicit some boredom after initial listens. Fortunately there’s enough content to make the purchase worth it, especially considering the addition of Dolby 5.1 sound and a small handful of extras.
