Joy Basu Interview

Hey bro, How’s things been going for you lately? What’s keeping you busy these days?
Things are great thanx. I’ve been creating lot of tracks for TV, recording originals and doing my own shows.

What got you into picking up the guitar and wanting to jam? And… who where some of your first influences?
After air guitaring for a while I decided its time to do the real thing. As far as just guitar players go, the 80s guys were my main influences.   Neal Schon, Yngwie, Jason Becker, Van Halen, Jake E Lee, Randy n just about everyone in the Shrapnel genre.

I see you have an extensive resume’ with playing for some of today’s top pop artist, how does one get those kinds of gigs?

Just like any other gig. You have to be hanging out with people in that scene. I was doing a lot of gigs around LA. Eventually
a couple of players I had worked with on different local gigs (they were already in the loop of big gigs) recommended me for two different major gigs. Then it snowballed.

Once you get the gig, what are the rehearsals like?
It really varies. I have been in situations where we rehearse for a 2 hr show for 2 months. On the other extreme I’ve had to prepare for a 3.5 hr show in 2 weeks.

Hey Joy, give the folks out here in guitar land a little run down of your home recording studio and what software you use to record with...
I use Digital performer, Native Instruments and Reason for software. I have couple of really good synths like Waldorf and Supernova. I use a M-Audio mic pre. For guitars I use various ESPs, sometimes I’ll mic stuff, but mostly I use guitar rig and a Sans Amp direct.

If you had any advice to give (for us po’ folk out here) on making money with music production, what would that be?
Be able to do work in various styles quickly. Knocking out a high quality track on a quick deadline is the way to go.

What’s it like touring the world with big star celebrities, and what are some of your more memorable experiences?
Its freakin’ awesome. Touring is what you want it to be. Everything you see you TV about people going crazy and causing chaos on the road is true and a blast. Some chose to stay in a room while touring, I choose to live life to its fullest!!!

Like most killa guitarist (like yourself)… I’m sure you’ve got even bigger dreamz for the future, give us a peak of what those ideas might be…
Thanx!! For sure, now its completely about being a successful solo artist. I am one of the first guitarists to be playing dance clubs and raves. I intend to take that very far.

What attracted you to the style of music you now put out to the masses?
Good times!!!! I associate dance music, clubs and raves with good times. Those are the places I go to hang out so now I choose to shred old school style in those clubs.

Give us a little run down of your gear and who you are endorsing these days…
ESP guitars, Native Instruments, M-Audio, Morley pedals, Seymour Duncan pickups, and Dean Markley strings

Give us some highlights of the ’07 Namm show this year that you were a part of…
Hmmm I pretty much went there to party and meet up with old n new friendz. That is my highlight for NAMM, I love seeing friends that I only get a chance to see there once a year.

How does your fan base and CD sales here in the U.S. fair with Japan and other countries overseas?
Mostly US .

Hey Joy, I always like to ask this question in interviewz… what’s in your favorite music players as we speak?

1.)    Home Stereo?
2.)    Car Stereo?
3.)    Ipod ?
4.)    Computer?
I don’t use an ipod. I use all the others. The computer studio monitors always sound the best/real. But its fun blasting the the home n car stereo as well.

Have you met any musicians who you would love to work with on a future project?

Its always fun working with talented friends. I like to collab with good positive people with similar goals.

Lastly, what do you want people to remember about you and your music?
 Emotions created from it.
