Can Not Read Music

Guitar Tab
Confessions of a Musician Who Can’t Read Music By L. David Hesler, 2005
Part I:
Why Play?
I admit, I can’t read music. I nearly failed music theory in high school, and I was perpetually last chair drummer in my high school symphonic band. Nonetheless, I’ve played guitar for a little over ten years, no matter what people thought of my playing.
So why do I play guitar? I play because I can’t knit, and because it’s kind of fun to watch people cringe as they walk by. Okay, maybe those aren’t the only reasons. I play guitar because I have to, because if I don’t my head will explode, my fingers will melt, and my soul will sink. Now that’s the long winded answer.
I also play because I don’t know how. Yeah, I know, that’s a weird answer. But I am, admittedly, a rather weird guy. Maybe I can explain it like this: we’re never done learning. I try to learn something new every day. It’s fun and basically, it makes you a better person in the long run. I play the guitar because I’m not done learning how to play. I hear new music, and sometimes old music, and wonder how you’d play it on the old six string. I hear a song on the radio and think to myself, “Hey, maybe they use this fingering or that fingering”. I’m not a know-it-all virtuoso. My fingers are too fat and I’ve got too much drummer’s blood in my veins. I play guitar because there’s always a new song to be made, a new melody to be heard.
I play guitar because it feels good to know that I’m not finished and that there’s something more to be accomplished. I hope you’ll join me and see what kind of sounds we can make together.
