Guitarist Mr. Funky Mendo Interview
Scott - Hi Paulo, thank you for agreeing to do an interview w/ my website Guitarz Forever.com …
Paulo - My pleasure Scott...
Scott - Give our readers a short but descriptive label for your style of music.
Paulo - I would label it as Rock that swings, Or as some call it RockFunk.
Scott - What's your connection w/ legendary recording artist Tina Turner?
Paulo - I had a number 1 single in Switzerland and she lived there at the time and asked if I could be a special guest, we got TO play an hour ever night just before she started. It was an awesome experience.
Scott - What was it like working w/ her and that level of talent?
Paulo - Humble, just a lovely person.
During his break Paulo kept on playing live all over Europe and beyond starting a successful publishing company with head quarters in London. However the itch to start writing, playing and producing songs for himself got too strong and now the result is here! In Sweden, where Paulo resides most of the year, it seems like the audience was waiting for Paulo and his patented funk flavored rock (or is it the other way around?) as the album immediately went to no. 1 on the iTunes album chart and to top-20 in the album charts. The song “Birds and the Bees” had extensive plays on the biggest national Swedish radio networks. Courtesy of: http://paulomendonca.com
Scott - Where do you live, play live, and record?
Paulo - I live in Gothenburg Sweden.
Scott - Are there a lot of places to play your style of music in and around your area? If so, could you name some venues?
Paulo - Most countries in Europe like Germany, Switzerland, Holland, France, Sweden.
Scott - Who were major influences?
Paulo - Deep Purple (with Hughes and Coverdale) and Thin Lizzy, Earth Wind and Fire and Frank Zappa.
Paulo started his musical career in his teens as a drummer, playing in various bands in Sweden, but it didn’t take too long before he realized that it was the guitar players that got all the girls. This led the young – and at that time the shy Paulo – to leave the drum kit forever! Playing the guitar took a great deal of time and commitment, but he was a man on a mission. And when at one point the spot behind the mic was available he thought, “why not give it a try”, and as it turned out, the boy could sing! After playing the cover scene for a couple of years he started gaining attention from the industry, got discovered and signed by a label, consequently leading to the release of his first record ”Respect My Aim”. Scott - Guitar and Rig set-up?
Paulo - I use a Blade Daytona with Lundgren picups and Yamaha Revstar with Lundgren Picups, EICH amp and cabinet and a Helix and as external pedals I use, Greenforest compressor and EVH and Boss Octaver, Custom Electronic wah.
Scott - What are you listening to these days?
Paulo - Unfortunately nowadays I don’t listen to music like I used to, I live by doing this and when I get home I treasure silence.
The new album, is the fourth full length release from Mr. Mendonca, and it’s evident that some things stay the same, and some things change! The approved groove and the playing from the best of the best are still there, but Paulo has also collaborated with a lot of writers to add different flavors and textures to his music. Primarily this can be seen in the lyrics department.
”I don’t see myself first and foremost as a lyricist, therefore I let people I trust and that know me well take care of that. I am a musician and thus music is how I express myself – through writing, playing and singing…”Courtesy of: http://paulomendonca.com
Scott - I also don't want to forget this... Tell us about any other things you may be in involved in or any special interest besides music that is close to your heart?
Paulo - I have a band called Stoney Mountain together with some friends of mine, Peter Iwers (In Flames) Jonas Ekdahl (Evergrey) Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie,Journey, TSO).
Scott - Paulo, I would like to thank you for your time and candor with our loyal readers and keep on fighting the good fight to bring us some awesome music.
Paulo - Doing my best Scott :)
